I dislike speed cameras, but recently in the West of Scotland a worrying trend has developed. Drivers aren`t using their detectors to avoid being done at 45 in a 40 area or 55 in a 50 zone. No they are driving at ridiculous speeds, over 90 on dual carriageways and motorways because they are being told there are no cameras ahead. This isn`t good driving, it is down right dangerous.

I have no problem with people in the middle of the night ripping the heartout of the UK`s motorways. But in the middle of the day when the roads of central Scotland are jammed with cars, the last thing you need are boy racers with no concern for anybody except how fast their car can go.
Remember all drivers are taught to drive cars at 30 mph, very few go back and receive remedial training. Any idiot can drive a car fast, but not every idiot can stop a car fast. I have been taught to do emergency stops at speed. I have twice had to do them, in 20 years of drivind, at 60mph due to overtaking oncoming traffic on my side of the road and it scares the shit out of you. Because despite the fact you know what to do, thereis this nagging feeling that this might be the time the car goes sideways instead of straight.

No, sat nav camera alerts shouldn’t be banned. ALL speed cameras in the UK are painted a lurid shade of yellow and stand out a mile off. They are also well signposted (as a result of numerous lawsuits) so there really is no need to be caught by a speed camera at all…

Yes, we all have our moments and lapses of concentration and the people who drive at 90 between cameras deserve to be punished. I have a clean license and in 5 years of having a license I have never had an accident. I drive at 80 on motorways, 70 on 60 roads (where clear) and adhere religiously to 30mph round towns, even less in residential areas depending on conditions / kids in street etc. I agree with what someone said previously about driving at a speed that suits the conditions.

What really bugs me is people who drive at 40mph on single carriageway trunk roads with a 60 limit. But that’s another debate entirely!

Neds in Corsas with baked bean can exhausts need to be shot. I’m with you there. Although to be fair none of them could really reach 90mph…..

Finally; please don’t ban speed camera detectors in sat nav, I got a Tom Tom for Xmas and I want to try it out!!

Could anyone tell me is there a way to get the "SPEED DETECTOR" thing with tom tom one.. someone has told me it’s illegal..yet whilst browsing through diff sat navs.. I keep seeing thing about speed detectors/cameras etc.. could you tell me how it all works? do i have to go to a special website? buy a special thing? if you have one or know of any help u can give me.. i would really appreciate it. thank you , in advance, for all your help.

Do you mean speed camera database?… which alerts you to the "safety camera" locations?

i bought a cd off ebay with speed camera, post code and voice upgrades for about £5 for my tomtom. came with good instructions on how to install aswell.

I have seen these Tom Tom satellite navigator units and I hear you can get add on software to make them speed camera detectors too

I’ve used the TomTom software ona PDA, but not the dedicated units, and as long as you keep the "points of interest" for the cameras up to dat, they are good. But do not rely on it 100% YOU MUST be aware, also police cars move as do mobile vans.

From the point of navigation they are great, I used it to find addresses in London for my job, often with doorstep accuracy.

Have fun driving, but remember that although you can get help to spot the cameras, the new mobile vans can read your car number and issue a ticket for speeding before you’ve had time to see it and react, so DO BE CAREFUL.

Can’t condone speeding, but know it’s something 99.9% of driver do to some degree.

Speed Camera’s in remote locations?

Are they connected to anything, or are they just for show, some are in prettey remote locations on the A9 in Scotland for example, how do they get a power supply, there is no Solar cells on them and it doesnt seem conceivable to run a cable to them, and how do they relay the data, also i have friends with speed camera detectors that do not pick anything up from the remote camera’s although i suspect that these are not entirely reliable, any ideas….

Try speeding past one and see what happens! Go on, I dare you.

I was just wondering if anyone knows roughly how much it would cost to get a speed camera detecor hardwired to ‘52′ reg bmw compact? And if anyone knows of a good place to do it in the glasgow area?

Please only give serious answers to this question unlike the fa*ny below who clearly doesnt know how speed camera detectors work. Just for your info pal, it gives a warning as you approach before you go through it. Also, in anticipation of tree-hugging folks that think everyone should crawl along the motorway at 50mph, please dont answer coz i dont have time for your patronsing crap!

Provided you are thinking of the GPS system it should be possible to wire it up to the ignition controlled circuit quite cheaply. Remember it will need to be removed and connected to a PC for updates occasionally. If you are planning a hideaway radar detector, they’re illegal in most countries and can lead to a charge of interfering with the course of justice.
Special note: some countries eg switzerland are a bit funny about any sort of camera system, so a fixed unit could give problems. If you have a radar receiver in France it will be confiscated, if it is fixed the car will be taken!

The sale, purchase and installation of a Snooper is perfectly legal. The use of one until recently may have contravened the 1949 Wireless and Telegraphy Act but a judgement of the Queens Bench Divisional Court dated 29th January 1998 makes it clear that the use of Radar Detectors is not unlawful as has hitherto been claimed by some. In the past a few prosecutions have been brought by claiming the use of radar detectors was contrary to section 5(b)(i) of the Wireless Telegraphy Act 1949 as amended by section 3 of the Post Office Act 1969. However the Acts refer to the interception of wireless communications for the purpose of obtaining information as to the content, sender or addressee of any message. The Court concluded that the radar transmission was not communicating a ‘message’ and therefore equipment designed to detect the presence of the transmission could not decode any such message.
