Shouldn`t speed camera detedtors on Sat Navs be banned.?
April 12th, 2010 | by admin |I dislike speed cameras, but recently in the West of Scotland a worrying trend has developed. Drivers aren`t using their detectors to avoid being done at 45 in a 40 area or 55 in a 50 zone. No they are driving at ridiculous speeds, over 90 on dual carriageways and motorways because they are being told there are no cameras ahead. This isn`t good driving, it is down right dangerous.
Creviazuk.
I agree with some of what you are saying, I am not some sort of Stalinist who thinks 70 good, 71 bad. I have no problem with people in the middle of the night ripping the heartout of the UK`s motorways. But in the middle of the day when the roads of central Scotland are jammed with cars, the last thing you need are boy racers with no concern for anybody except how fast their car can go.
Remember all drivers are taught to drive cars at 30 mph, very few go back and receive remedial training. Any idiot can drive a car fast, but not every idiot can stop a car fast. I have been taught to do emergency stops at speed. I have twice had to do them, in 20 years of drivind, at 60mph due to overtaking oncoming traffic on my side of the road and it scares the shit out of you. Because despite the fact you know what to do, thereis this nagging feeling that this might be the time the car goes sideways instead of straight.

No, sat nav camera alerts shouldn’t be banned. ALL speed cameras in the UK are painted a lurid shade of yellow and stand out a mile off. They are also well signposted (as a result of numerous lawsuits) so there really is no need to be caught by a speed camera at all…
Yes, we all have our moments and lapses of concentration and the people who drive at 90 between cameras deserve to be punished. I have a clean license and in 5 years of having a license I have never had an accident. I drive at 80 on motorways, 70 on 60 roads (where clear) and adhere religiously to 30mph round towns, even less in residential areas depending on conditions / kids in street etc. I agree with what someone said previously about driving at a speed that suits the conditions.
What really bugs me is people who drive at 40mph on single carriageway trunk roads with a 60 limit. But that’s another debate entirely!
Neds in Corsas with baked bean can exhausts need to be shot. I’m with you there. Although to be fair none of them could really reach 90mph…..
Finally; please don’t ban speed camera detectors in sat nav, I got a Tom Tom for Xmas and I want to try it out!!

Of course you are right and the answer simply is that we need more motorway police … in marked and unmarked cars. People do take chances like that and they have to be caught … they are a menace to the safety of just about everyone around them …… I have a GPS camera detector and it nags me to death when I am one mile per hour over the limit where cameras are in operation … it has slowed me down as a result and I am much more aware of changing speed limits. So in answer to your question, no they shouldn’t be banned. But we do need additional measures to trap people who drive blatantly well over the odds …. try writing to your local head of traffic police for the area concerned and ask for an opinion and what preventative measures they may put in place. You may just get a reply!

No, because people think MOST motorists can’t use common sense and let traffic flow at a speed that’s safe for the road conditions. They need ‘numbers’ to feel safe…which is why morons do 70 in thick fog & snow…because they’ve been force fed 70 safe…71 unsafe.
The last few cars I’ve owned are all capable of well over 150mph…and I’ve never been near the top speed. But 90 or 100mph where conditions would allow would feel the same in a ‘proper car’ as 50 or 60 in a small ‘micra’.
I hate speed cams. I have a totally clean licence too, so it’s not a bitter & twisted, sour grapes rant.
But these cameras are put on ONLY the straightest, safest sections of road – not where the accidents occur. eg. outside schools & on rural roads. They are a pointless, money making scam to keep the UK motorist in check.
Get more REAL police on the roads…ones with good sense.
ADDITIONAL:
True, True Middenraker. It take skill to handle a car at speed – and I totally agree with you about ‘boyracers’ who ‘think’ they can handle a knackered corsa at 80 doing stupid overtakes on the A9 for instance…weaving through traffic. But CAMERAS DON’T PREVENT THIS – only REAL coppers do!

there has to be road signs warning you of speed cameras anyway so what difference does it make whether a road sign warns you or your sat nav.. not that i’ve got one

speeding should be controlled, but it does seem to me, that the police and local authorities are using them to raise money. Everybody speeds at some time even Steven Ladyman (transport minister) who has 9 points on his licence (top gear)
Its not been proved that camera’s cut down on accidents or deaths
which make me wonder what purpose they serve. Surely education is a better way. Also all new driver’s should be limited to a maximum cc size car, the same as young bikers are. It seems totally stupid that a 17yr old can go out and buy a car that most experienced driver would have trouble controlling on wet a greasy roads. They should also earn points for not speeding, accidents Maybe a warning system, i.e. if stopped for bad driving manners they would be issued with penalty points.and if they collect more than say 20 points then should face a months ban. Rather than fines and 3yr penalty points.Just a thought what does anyone else think ?

Remember when thing…
SPEED DOES NOT KILL…. IT IS THE SUDDEN STOP THAT DOES!!
So don’t speed and you won’t have to worry so much about your head going through the windshield.
