Help! Between the Sprint Palm 800w and Blackberry Curve, which one should I buy and why?

April 22nd, 2010 | by admin |

I’m having great difficulty choosing between these two smartphones (the Sprint Palm Treo 800w and Blackberry Curve, or other BB model) since one will be my very first PDA-type phone. I’ve received passionate advice from fans of both. The factors I consider to be most important are the following: internet research, speed of internet browsing and practical, real-life-utility of the internet function, well- performing GPS, reliability and quality of phone calls and connections, and a camera with video. I kindly seek out the counsel of a technologically knowledgeable person who has actually used these these devices and knows the difference. Please help me stop the insanity so I can decide! My heartfelt thanks in advance!
Thanks so much for your comments! I’ve now learned that the Palm Treo 800w (just released a couple of weeks ago) runs on the Microsoft Word Professional 6.1 "platform" and has ample memory to run it, while the Blackberry has its own operating system. I see the first answer addresses this issue, but the Palm 755p, just prior to this one, does not have some of the capabilities I need. Any more thoughts? Will MS word be more widely used on phones? These devices without a contract cost approximately $600.00!!! Yikes!! However, I’m limited to Sprint phones. Thanks for any additional info you may provide. Still stumped….

I was kind of in the same boat as you. I was trying to decide between a Treo 800w and the various other phones on the market (smart phones).

Also I just got the Centro about 6 months ago and used my two year upgrade so I figured that I would be paying that 600 bucks if I decided on the Treo which isnt the most expensive but come on, 600 bucks.

Anyway after reviewing all the additions to this model I was sold. Mind you I also had a Moto Q with win mobile (older version) and it was sorry as all get up but I am willing to take a chance this time around because the MotoQ was a horrid phone.

One of the biggest issues with Windows Mobile is that none of the programs close when you hit the "X" and that leaves it running in the background. This can be fixed by attaching your Task Manager to a button on the phone to quickly access and close a program.
Another fix is one of the many third party apps or tweaks that give you close options upon hitting "X". Another thing your missing out on is picture mail, no windows mobile phone on Sprint Supports a native application for it like other phones but it may or may not be a deal breaker for you..

The phone it self sucks as far as batt life especially with GPS (works great), WiFi, and everything else that is running but it isnt so bad that you cant get around it.

When I purchased mine, since I wasnt in a place to upgrade I looked to ebay. This is what all I purchased.

Treo 800w – $336.00 Free S&H
Spare Batt for Treo – $20.00 $2.00 S&H
2gig MicroSD – $12.99 Free S&H

So for under 400 bucks I got a brand new phone, a 2gig card and a spare batt. I suggest you at least browse Ebay to see the prices.

The internet is crazy fast if you are living in a area that supports EVDO rev A (I think thats what its called). Decent 2mp Cam.

I cant say if Windows Mobile is more widely used or not but it is a piece of cake to sync and its like taking your computer with you.

(Note: course the deals I found on ebay can be found on other phones as well.)

Well thats about it for me, dont feel like reading a long review try Youtube or google for more answers.

Hello. I would be more than happy to help you out today!

I’ve had the Curve but not the Treo.

    Lets get started:

    To answer your questions:

internet research-the internet is fast on the curve but you need a wifi connection

Speed of internet browsing: very fast and up to date

Im not sure about the GPS because my phone does not have GPS

It is very reliable I dont think that it will ever die on you. Just in case it does you can back everything up onto your computer through the USB using the desktop manager CD. Also all of your contacts are saved to your sim card if you have T-Mobile (not sure about providers).

The quality of phone calls are great it is very clear and never goes staticy. The speakerphone is also very good quality. Just dont drop your phone or you will be sorry =). I dropped my phone and it got all messed up and things were not functioning properly.

I hope that I have helped you out tonight and that you dont go insane!! =) Have a great night!!
