What is the best Black Friday GPS deal?

February 25th, 2010 | by admin |

I’d like a GPS, preferably one that warns you ahead of time about speeding cameras, and/or traffic jams.
Thanks for your help
what brand is more reliable, TomTom or Garmin or Magellan?
what about getting a Google Android phone with free GPS instead?
what do people think of the TomTom xl 325SE from Wal-mart for $89? It has 4.3 " screen and text-to-speech
has anybody tried the GPS mentioned by Uni Q below?

You would probably be happier with a GPS that has a 4.3" screen rather than the 3.5" screen on the less expensive units. I’ve seen Tomtoms, Garmins, and Magellans with the larger screen for as low as $80. I don’t think you will get traffic alerts or speed camera locations in any of the black Friday sale devices. You would probably have to get a more expensive unit that’s not on sale.

I prefer Garmin because they are easier to use, but that $59 TomTom Wal-Mart has is the best deal. It offers text-to-speech, something cheap units usually don’t do. Text-to-speech means the receiver will say "turn right on main street" instead of just "turn right." As for reliability, I would say Garmin first, TomTom a close second, and Magellan definitely third. Their customer service is pretty awful if something goes wrong with the unit.

You mentioned wanting traffic. The Garmin nuvi 265WT is a good one for about $195 from Amazon. Some stores had it on sale for $165 (really good price for that unit) but they sold out already. The 265WT comes with free lifetime traffic and does text-to-speech.

Additional info: I recommend *against* the IGO model mentioned in another answer. IGO is a smaller manufacturer without the proven record of customer support and product updates that TomTom or Garmin have.

Those cheap GPS’s that are being sold everywhere are not enough if you want to get accurate maps, turn by turn spoken directions, speed camera (speedcam), bluetooth, and more. GPS Navigation Portable Multimedia Unit IGO AMIGO is the best gps system, it has a simple control – simply touch the color screen to enter a destination, has a turn-by-turn voice directions, 2-D or 3-D maps and more feature like games, notes, music player to play your MP3, watch movie on it, read your flash file on it, etc.

It is considered a higher model GPS for all it can do. It does more than the suggested Garmin model: 255W, 265WT, 760 or the higher models 765T, 775T.

The GPS Navigation Portable Multimedia Unit IGO AMIGO has text-to-speech (you get turn by turn spoken directions with the real names of streets (e.g. "turn left in 50 feet at Nebraska Way", rather than merely "turn left in 50 feet")), it has a BIG 5.0 ich diagonal touch screen color display not like the small 4.3-Inch on most other GPS’s like Garmin.

For the features it has, the price is the best I have found and it works like a charm: has text-to-speech, 5.0-inch diagonal color touchscreen, bluetooth, preloaded Maps with Navteq data of North America + Hawaii + Puerto Rico, etc.

I’ve had mine for a while and love it. Check it out here for yourself:
