At what point does a police vehicle camera start to record?
February 10th, 2010 | by admin |When does the camera in a police vehicle start to record video? all the time, when the police lights are activated, is it auto or manually started by officer, is it triggered by speed set point? Just the in car ones, I am not referring to the hand held lasers or roadside radar, only to vehicles that are already in motion. Ontario police vehicles specifically.
Thanks
Usually when the overhead flashing lights are turned on.

All of the above, the cruisers have an auto camera setting, it starts when the lights are flipped on and the officers can control it manually or by remote.
This camera is for their protection as well as yours, if they assault you or you assault them it is recorded, if they chase you and someone crashes into them they have it recorded, and so on.

I am a retired police officer. I retired as a sergeant, after 29 years, from a very large department, about 12,000 officers. I was a patrol officer for 4 years in a very diverse area. I was a tactical officer in the high rise project areas of my city. We called it vertical patrol in that we walked the the stairways of the high rises most of the time. I did that for 5 years and was promoted by test to detective. I worked violent crime (homicide, sex, officer involved shootings, robbery, kidnapping, serious non property incidents) for 11 years until I was promoted to sergeant. I worked as a street supervisor, a bicycle patrol supervisor and a desk sergeant/watch commander.
During my time as a tactical officer and a detective I was a unit representative for the police union.
I have a B.A in English and an M.S. in Law Enforcement Administration

It all depends on what type of recording system is in the patrol vehicle. Does Ontario use a VHS type dashcam system or a digital dashcam system? Regardless of which one, most dashcam systems will start recording when the emergency lights are activated or when the officer manually presses record (from inside the vehicle or from his/her wireless microphone). Some systems will also start recording when the patrol vehicle reaches a certain speed, or when the RADAR displays a certain target speed. However, in some digital systems, when the camera starts recording, it will also show what happened a couple of minutes before, which can come in handy in certain situations.

The camera set up is a dual stage with a hard drive recorder and a separate DVD burner, the hard drive starts to record the minute it is turned on however the life of the recording is limited. The dvd however does not burn until the emergency lights are activated the dvd drive burns what was recorded on the hard drive beginning 30 seconds prior to the lights being activated. The recording stops when the officer turns the record button off.
Bear in mind not all vehicles are set up the same, some begin to burn on the dvd at different times.
Some hard drives are on a two or five minute burn cycle in that after 2 to 5 minutes they erase what was recorded on the hard drive.
