How can I play around with the shutter on my camera so that you can write out words with one source of laser?

I don’t know how to explain it…but in certain photographs, you can spell out words with a laser or a phone since the shutter speed is low or high or something. I have a nikon d5000.

Basically you need really slow shutter speeds. If you’re doing it yourself, set it to something like 30-60 seconds, depending on how fast or slow you want to write your words so that you don’t have to hold down the button. If you’re with someone else, get that person to go on BULB mode. It’s when you can hold on to the shutter button for as long as you like and release it when you’re done. Having a tripod will be great if you have one.

The methods above will give you a completely black background showing only the words you write. If you want to illuminate your background too, use a flash, preferably an external one instead of the one that already comes attached to your camera. Set the flash to 2nd curtain. When you’re ready to take the shot, press the shutter button halfway down and after the flash ignites, start writing. But HOLD THE SHUTTER BUTTON, DON’T LET GO. When you’re done, press it down fully and you’re done.

From my experience and what I’ve seen, is you have to have your shutter speed and ISO at a low speed. Do it in a dark room or some low-lit area. The exposure of it would be at least 30 seconds to 1 minute. If you don’t like what you see, delete. An try again. With the Nikon D5000 the shutter speed should be on a roller near the button. ISO should be on the thumb buttons maybe. Last time I messed with one was at Target. But like I said if you don’t like it try again. Also your going to want to use a tripod for the long exposures in low light.
