Will I get a speeding ticket?

February 21st, 2010 | by admin |

Might be a silly question, but I was doing 30 in a 30 and a policeman tested me with their laser gun then turned to his colleague who wrote something down. The people behind me slowed down to less than 30, do they know something about speedometer calibrations that I don’t? Also, what’s the deal if its one of those 30 zones that change to 20 zones when the lights flash? I’m pretty sure the lights weren’t flashing but I was distracted by the three motorists coming the other way flashing their headlights at me. I was starting to worry that I had a pigeon plastered to the front of the car or something! … but obviously this was the national speed camera warning in practice!
Thanks for you answers guys. I’m really worried about the part time speed limit though, it was about 9.45, so the kids must have been at school by then… I’m kicking myself for looking at the other drivers flashing their lights and not at the part-time signals sign to see if THAT was flashing. oh the irony :S

You’ll be fine, don’t worry.

With a hand held gun, you’re normally stopped there and then.

It could have been worse, you could have been wiping your nose.

    If they did it with a hand held gun you have a chance. If it had changed to a 20 and you were doing 30 then you were bang to wrights

    Think you are OK .. The flashing lights were a warning to you that a speed trap was ahead , The motorists behind you who slowed were playing extra safe and slowing to 25 or so . to be on the safe side .. generally a leeway of up to 10% might be allowed so at 30 or even a mile or two more you should be OK .

    Usually , if it is a manned gun (ie, not a camera with road markings) you would have been stopped and a ticket issued if going around 33-34 MPH. Laser guns are also used to read number plates to check for up to date road tax, MOT, and insurance.

    hi laura

    you should be ok it happened to my friend and nothing came of it they write it down so at the end of the hour or so they can say how many was on the limit and how many over. also you are normally allowed 10% which means you can do 33 in 30 before you get the ticket although it not 100% i would do the limit only to be safe. if just over you may just receive a warning letter but if caught a second time will be ticketed.

    if it was a 30 mph and went to 20mph you would have know cos the speed limit signs would say 20 in advance. and as far as i know the police cant do it just after a sign changes.

    if you don’t receive the (nip) notice of intent to prosecute in 14 postal days not counting the day of the offence then you are fine hope this helps but you should be ok.

    let us know what happens.

    If the speedo really said thirty then you were almost certainly doing 30 at the most or as little as 27 if it is working properly. As it was a hand held gun they would have had to stop you as they do not take pictures so you are in the clear.
