Which is the good camera to buy ?

September 27th, 2011

Sony DSC-HX100v OR Nikon Coolpix P500

I have done some review on
http://www.dpreview.com/products/compare/side-by-side?products=nikon_cpp500&products=sony_dschx100v&sortDir=ascending
and i find following differences :

Nikon P500 is better in : optical zoom, Max aperture, Sensor shift Image Stab.

Sony DSC-HX100V better in : MegPix, Optical Image Stab., FPS, Max & Min shutter speed, Max Resolution, Flash Range, Orientation Sensor (not interested in GPS builtin).

I am still confused which one is more powerful, also i would like to see which one is more reliable, durable, handy to use (do i need to consider brand also ?)

My main purpose behind buying camera is to family photography, album making and occasionally nature photography.

I also see one more camera (not sure about the features of it) – Sony Alpha NEX-3

can you please help me with this ?

thanks a lot, appreciate your help.

How do you know if your shutter is accurate? older film cameras with leaf shutters?

September 12th, 2011

Mic test is hard to do for the higher speeds like 250 or 1/500 of a second.
I cant find the laser equipment to make my own.
I dont really trust the antique camera dealers here. They seem shady and not very honest, i will steal your camera dealers.

Most professional camera repair techs have a device on their bench that measures shutter speed. You cwn buy or build one. See links below for plans etc.

Should I get an iPhone or Android?

September 7th, 2011

I’m eligible for my Verizon "new every 2" phone upgrade. Should I just go for the iPhone or is there something better? I currently have the Palm Pre Plus.

What I need:
Phone
Email
Camera
Calendar
Maps/gps
Facebook
Basic apps, nothing fancy
Better speed

I will NEVER use it for games or music.

Suggestions?

Another great thing about android as that if you dont like something (keyboard, homescreen, etc.) it can easily be swapped without jail-breaking, unlike the iphones one-size-fits-all approach.

Other features only on android
Turn-by-turn voice GPS
Better and larger screen
No need to connect to computer to sync

police radars, scanners, cameras in dubai?

August 30th, 2011

k im looking to buy a radar/laser detector or whatever, never bought one only seen them on cars on youtube. Mainly buying this for dubai as they are cracking down on speeding and the problem is they have fixed radars and cops with radar guns and portable radar machines now im not sure if the radar guns that the cops hold work differently from fixed radars (which most dont work, the physical unit is their but n o camera inside) but either way i dont want to get caught by them. any ideas or suggestions are welcomed

My husband downloaded an app which tells him where cameras are installed.

@Fari: Germany got no speed limits? Where did you get this nonsens from?

What is a good camera for concerts?

August 23rd, 2011

Hi,So I find myself going to alot of concerts and one thing that always bothered me was that I always end up with rubbish pictures! So for Christmas I looking to get a good camera that will prefore well in the low light of concerts(I go to alot of rock shows so there is usually no lasers and sh*t to brighten up the place) I’de also like there to be a pretty big zoom distance :)
So to break it down,The main things I would like are; High ISO
*Reasonably small and compact
*Good zoom
*I’d like a fast shutter speed since there will be alot moving
*Not overly expensive?

Does such a wonder exist? :D

I guess you already know you’re asking for a miracle, right?

Compact camera sensors will never be able to compare in ISO performance to DSLRs. This will be your sticking point if you’re limited to compact cameras. In low light to keep the shutter speed high you’re going to have to bump the ISO though.

Black and white always looks better with noise (grain) than colour shots so you could try that.

The Fuji EXR models feature trick sensors to help in low light and also have some fairly big zoom range. Take a look at those e.g F500EXR with up to ISO12800. The issue with that though is the maximum aperture is f3.5-5.3. In low light you ideally need wide apertures e.g. f2.8. The trick sensor will help but there’s no substitution for wide aperture and large sensor.

There does exist a compact camera with a larger sensor and a fast aperture. The Samsung EX1 for example has a maximum aperture of f1.8. The trade off is that it doesn’t have much in the way of zoom. This also goes for cameras like the Powershot S90.

So….

Large sensor & wide aperture BUT small zoom = Samsung EX1 / Powershot S95, etc

Smaller sensor & smaller aperture BUT big zoom and trick sensor = Fujifilm F500EXR, etc

How does a GPS tracking unit calculate speed?

August 21st, 2011

The drivers of my company want to know how does a GPS tracking unit calculate speed and how accurate is it.

For average speed over a long distance it takes the distance traveled and divides it by the time taken – exactly what the other answers said.

For instantaneous speed, how fast you were going at one point in time, this approach doesn’t work. Which is a pity because that’s exactly what you want to know if you want to check your drivers aren’t speeding.
Each GPS position has an error of up to 5 meters, that means that if you take two positions a second apart take the distance between them and calculate the speed you could be off by up to 10 meters per second or about 22.5 mph.

The way a GPS actually calculates speed at any given moment is by measuring the doppler shift in the signals from the satellites. Just as a car engine or police siren sounds higher pitch when it’s heading towards you than when it’s heading away the signals from the satellites change very slightly depending on how fast you are moving towards or away from them.
If you know where you are (you have a GPS position) and you know where and how fast the satellites are moving (they broadcast that information) then by measuring the doppler on the signals you can calculate how fast the receiver is moving far more accurately than by taking the difference between two positions.

How accurate is it? As with anything to do with GPS it depends on how many satellites are being tracked and how strong the signals are. It would be rare for it to be more than one or two mph wrong.

Has the uk government caused this rioting in london?

August 16th, 2011

Does anyone think the uk government has no one to blame but therselves for this rioting.

In the last 14 years this government has:

Released thousands of paedophiles onto the streets.

Has made victims lifes hell, rather than the offenders, ie milly dowlers family.

Has punished the poor, and rewarded the rich.

Has dished out continuing prison sentences of 8 years for murdering someone, but 12 years for robbery, you see it on a daily basis in uk court of laws.

Has written another 5,000 new laws, it would now take you a year to read the statute books, never mind understand them.

Has let 600 politicians off from stealing, most other citizens would be imprisoned, and they are laughing in voters faces.

Has taxed us through the roof, we now give the government 60% of everything we earn, tax on cigs, drink, car tax, stealth tax, national insurance, tax on food, clothes, houses, and what do they do with the money, bomb other countries to smithering, ie iraq, afghanistan, libya.

Speed traps everywhere, stealing money off us, red light cameras, cops with laser guns, laughing at you, when fining you £60, but its not about the £30 million they make every year, its about safer roads. Yeeahhhhhh, right.

Parking tickets, balliffs, wheel clampers, all stealing money from us, protest, and you will be fined or imprisoned.

Is it any wonder why thousands have had enough of this lying, cheating, conning, two faced, hypocritical, government, and all its agents of forces, ie police, customs, excise, inland revenue, councils.

You can only fool people for so long, and pull the wool over their eyes for so long.

The UK citizens have had enough, does anyone agree?

It is Cold war between UK and USA, they secretly cheating each other to get maximum share in Afghanistan.
Raymond Davis of USA was secretly spying interests of UK in Pakistan, was caught by Pakistan Intelligence with back of UK.
US Helicopter is attacked in Kabul
UK secretly supports Taliban and was unhappy on killing of Osama.

All are part of Cold war, before the war Field was Pakistani Land now it is spread into UK and USA lands as well. It will result in destruction of any one of UK or USA.

Riots….. Am I really the the only person who’s thought of this OBVIOUS solution?

August 13th, 2011

Every criminal’s best friend is anonymity … would you agree to a system where every citizen has an indelible personalised tag on their skin inside their upper arm that can be read by a laser from 50 yards..like a number plate recognition system for people. Coppers can identify criminals instantly, hoodie or no hoodie How could a law abiding citizen object to this?
Imagine a world without the universal car registrations, we’d just laugh at speed cameras, red lights, pedestrian crossings, and keep going!
if you disagree, please offer a CONCRETE reason, not just the old human rights/ Orwellian doom theory rhetoric. And try to resist mentioning the Holocaust as a lazy attempt to give a flimsy answer some kind of moral gravity. People who gave weak answers when this qu was posted earlier need not repost.
Several very compelling cases against, there. My brainwave is starting to fall to bits!
Moral of story: You’ll never win someone over by just rubbishing/insulting them. And NEVER be sarcastic.
If anyone’s got any better ideas, I’m all ears.

A tech-savvy criminal would crack the system and identity theft would rise ten-fold.

What camera is best for this?

August 7th, 2011

I have a Nikon COOLPIX P100 that takes great photos, but doesn’t do that great at concerts. I am looking for a camera that takes clear photos at concerts(ex: Adam Lambert concert) The concerts I go to have lasers and stuff like that and the objects are constantly moving. But I also go to house party concerts(ex: Monte Pittman) where the lighting is odd. I would like for the camera to take pretty good scenery photos too as I like to take nature pictures as well.

What I want:
Would rather a Canon
High ISO
Doesn’t need to be small/compact
Good zoom(My Nikon has 26x zoom & love that about it)
I’d like a fast shutter speed since many objects will be moving
Highest price I’ll go: $475

I don’t mind getting a used camera. I will most likely be buying this camera off of Ebay or Amazon so higher priced cameras will be cheaper if I buy a used one.

I am not worried about accessories because my birthday is in about 3 months, then Christmas is only 1 month after that so I will be getting a lot of money or I can just ask for the accessories. So the price doesn’t include all that kind of stuff.

This is the 6th time this question has been posted, want to stop now?
