Difference between canon powershot 8.0 mp (sx100is) and canon powershot pro series 8 mp (s5is)?

May 3rd, 2010 | by admin |

I have a 6mp canon powershot that I like very much. I was thinking of going to a digital slr because I want to be able to get really good and clear pictures of small items, but I don’t know if i am ready for that yet. But I am also considering the 2 above cameras which would also give me stabilization, PICTURE TAKING SPEED (so lacking in my camera) and face detection. Can anyone tell me which of these cameras is better? Also should I be looking for higher mp’s? Obviously, I am not an expert so I need all the help I can get!

If you are wanting a camera that is step up from your current camera, you probably might want to consider getting the S5is. Although it is about $100 more expensive, it offers more manual controls and better picture quality in addition to more features that you can grow into when you become a better photographer. It also does have a flip and twist LCD display and an optical viewfinder, both of which the SX100 don’t have. The optical zoom is higher on the S5 than the SX100 (12x vs. 10x).
If you don’t have budget limitations, then you may consider getting a DSLR in the Canon brand, either the XTI or the new XSI. I assume you have a fair amount of knowledge about photography and even if you don’t, most DSLRs these days are amateur friendly and offer many automatic controls while providing superb image quality!
Hopefully this is of some help. Best of luck in your choice!
