It’s a nice enough camera, but it’s really a bridge camera… not a compact, but also not a DSLR i.e. You will not be able to change the lens for different focal lengths and apertures.

Congrats in the decision to purchase your first SLR!
If you are already decided you like photography enough to invest in a more professional camera, I recommend that you pick a camera with interchangeable lenses, since you will eventually want a lens upgrade and more flexibility. The Sony Alpha is a nice choice, although I personally shoot with Canon.
You might want to do your research and find out which DSLRs give you more compatibility options. For example, I use Pentax, Olympus, Contax, Leica and Zenitar mount lenses on my Canon body via adapter rings, and you get many sweet deals on ebay for older, manual focus lenses (I’ve got lenses for as little as $9-$20, including shipping. No kidding). You probably won’t have $10,000 to spend on equipment, so having the option of using a wide array of lenses could really solve your budget problems.
Good luck

It’s a good starter camera for family and friends stuff. If you want to learn photography, you’ll need to get an SLR. Best Buy, frys.com or samys.com have some good deals on SLR Packages. Stay with Nikon of Canon.
Canon XSI is good.
