BAD cop bad laser gun, video proves otherwise
May 26th, 2010 | by admin |
This is a video taken from my dash-cam. It records 24/7 when the vehicle is in motion. GPS speed and heading is imprinted on the video. Was busted by the cop using an LTI Ultralyte 200 model. Said I was doing 72 in a 55. Went to court w/video, ticket reduced to 68, and no points. 17MPH over vs. 13MPH is diff between major and minor speeding. One will get your insurance raised (if not canceled). The other is a free-be. This was in Pasco County Florida.
Here is a description with parts list and cost that I posted on a forum: http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/1111748-post33.html

@erkme73 Don’t …
@erkme73 Don’t think I agree with that statement. I have been a cop for over 10 years, but am not a patrol officer anymore, and I can say without a doubt that the system is definitely stacked in favor of the defendant. Regardless, I would not want someone to get gigged for speeding if they actually weren’t. I never used laser, I always used radar, which was calibrated yearly and tested daily with tuning forks, with perfect accuracy.

And questioning law …
And questioning law enforcement equipment and its accuracy is exactly what the system does not want us (civilians) to do. Here’s a link to the LTI camera used: teletrafficuk[dot]com/pdf/ultralyte_100_manual.pdf. – go to page 36. Here’s a quote “Speed Accuracy: +- 1mph”.

@erkme73 I just find it hard to believe that a laser would have that much error, but I guess you would know. Pretty good idea though, although I don’t think I could afford it. Pretty neat.

LTI …
@CryptoDriver
LTI 20/20, the manufacturer of the laser gun used in this case, has a published accuracy of +/- 1.0 MPH. The Garmin GPS receiver used in the video has a published accuracy of 0.1 MPH. That 10X more accuracy. It was good for the judge, and good for me. Even the cop came to me after the trial saying “I don’t know why my gun was off by that much”. FOUR other radar signs all matched my GPS to the MPH. I have no doubt GPS is more accurate.

If I had to …
If I had to question the accuracy, I’d question the GPS, it is not designed for pinpoint accuracy on speed measurement.

junky:This was not …
junky:This was not the authors defense so its irrelavent to his case and this discussion up to now. But it is a great one. The greater the angle from the cop the slower your speed, Unless the cop can manipulate his Lidar just right alongside your vehicle between the 2signal burst. Of course he’s already behind due to his angle, which is why we see only a 6% gain. But my point was that his evidence is poor because I could overlay any ‘gps speed’ on any video with my Avid in 5 min to fake it.

Didn’t watch the …
Didn’t watch the end of the video, huh? It shows him going by a stationary speed sign which shows the speed of passing cars, his GPS speed and the sign matched. So, he has more than one example to show the accuracy of the system.
People holding radar guns want to track with the vehicle. That causes errors in the speed shown on the radar gun by the “sweep effect” which is being litigated in several countries.

Only if audio is …
Only if audio is recorded, and then only in the 13 states that have a two-party consent requirement. In my state, the audio recording law does not apply in places where there is no reasonable expectation of privacy (i.e. road side stops). Techno – get a bumper sticker that says “For quality purposes, all traffic stops are recorded”. Thus notification is given.

I’ve owned many …
I’ve owned many police radars, and ALL of them in various vehicles are only accurate to 2 MPH. When a RADAR is certified, it’s a 2 section certification, the ground speed for the radar, and the targe speed. Each side is accurate to +/- 1MPH, so that gives you 2MPH. Now on my old ‘91 Caprice 9C1 police package, the car shows 2MPH off of the RADAR, but never have used a GPS in conjunction. Most cars built with an electric (VSS) are 2MPH off to begin with… Makes you feel good..

If the LIDAR …
If the LIDAR operator allows the beam to sweep across the side of the vehicle he is tracking, (back to front) the reading can be off by as much as 20MPH. The only accurate LIDAR speed reading is taken with a stationary mounted unit. Handhelds can and are manipulated to give high readings and every cop and prosecutor knows it.

Behind = delayed. …
Behind = delayed. Not slower (speed). The speed imprinting on the screen is 1-2 seconds behind real time. Provided I’m driving a constant speed, this becomes irrelevant.

I have three gps …
I have three gps systems in my car. My radar detector has one with constant displayed speed, my dash camera has it’s own display, and my cell phone has it’s own.
My speedometer is consistently 1-2 MPH FASTER than all three GPS speeds. All three GPS read EXACTLY the same.
When passing a radar speed sign, it is 100% lined up with my GPS units,not my speedometer.
I I have verified this w/2 rental cars, my wifes car, and others. OEMS intentionally up the speedo. Warranty runs out 1-2% sooner.
