How long can a police officer pursue you for speeding before they decide to pull you over?

I was using my new GPS to try a new route home. Unfamiliar with the device, I programmed the cruise control to 65 MPH, the legal limit on 17K. About 6 miles, the speed limit changed to 55 MPH where a work zone commenced. I saw the signs, looked at my gas guage and commenced to exit and get gas. I saw a long line of cars and a sign stating "prepare to stop". I pulled up to the gas station, got out of my car, put the debit card in the pump and was just about to start pumping when when a police car flew up my bumper and told me to get back in my car. I was scared to death! I asked what was wrong and he told me that I was going 76 MPH in a 55 MPH. No way! Then he asks for the lic and reg, which I handed to him in record time. The officer asks, "where are you coming from"? and "why were you there"? "Where are you going now"? Then he asked me to take my sunglasses off. "Why are you wearing sunglasses"? It was not sunny that day. In fact it was rather gloomy but I ran out without doing my makeup and the glasses hide a lot. Wait… is any of this any of his business?

I went back to 17K the next day to take pictures and try to see the signs and figure out where I could have gone wrong. I saw at least 5 troopers in speed traps all over the road. That’s fine. That is what they do. But to wait and then pull someone over and indicate that they were speeding when the speed limit changed is akin to "entrapment". To clock in one area, wait for the speed limit to change, then accuse you of speeding when you weren’t! But to follow me off an exit and not pull me over until I got out to pump gas? Is this even legal. I think he got the wrong car! Is this legal?

They can wait as long as they want. If whatever they do is legal or not, it makes no difference, they will do it anyhow. Same goes for what is, or is not his business.

I have been pulled twice for speeding when it never happened. There is nothing you can do about it except pay the bastards. When it is time for their ticket quota to be met, they don’t give a damn if you are guilty or not.

They wonder why people don’t like them. Beats the hell outta me.

As long as they need to. They may be running your plate and drivers license and be waiting for a backup car. There is no set time.
