Would you bet a ticket on a radar detector?

February 13th, 2010 | by admin |

I’ve been looking at the Valentine 1 (used – V1) for my car after speed traps 7 mph over in my area and a 270 dollar ticket later (revenue trap).. ughh. I know the best practice is NOT to speed but there are always those accidents where a) 7mph over is ridiculous and b) you accidentally don’t realize you’re speeding. In anyone’s opinion – how good are these radar detectors in early detection, ie, before you’re caught especially versus different radar detectors. My friend lent me his GPS Cobra GPS and every time the thing would go off, bam, there’s the cop! More like, you’ve just been caught! It’s hard to justify the cost, but if it’s worth it, it’s worth it. Any tips would be appreciated.

I have never given a speeding ticket to anyone under 10 mph either. Save your money-we have you long before your radar detector goes off.

EDIT: If you can’t get to work without speeding, I suggest you leave you home earlier.

I’ve never given a ticket to someone doing less than 10 over.

But if I see a radar detector, you aren’t getting a warning, either.

I write speeding tickets all the time to people who buy those things. Your call, but I wouldn’t spend the money.

Old radars use continuous beam, and were subject to easy detection. New ones use a ping, and are harder to detect. Often, your warning tells you that you just got tagged.

Only 2 places ban them, Virginia(where I live) and D.C. naturally. I have to unhook mine when coming back home when I enter Va. I have a cobra, works great. I also have phantomplate.com for those nasty speed and red light cameras, the tag cover, not the spray.
The hell with that cops response, I am ret. law enfor., and wouldnt do that just because someone is trying to defend himself from the "tax", which is what its all about anyway, nothing but revenue.

Yes, try a valentine, you can get them cheap online. I have avoided about 3 traps already within 1 month. These pigs are out for blood. They like to set up traps and catch the unsuspecting person that is just trying to get to work.

They have electronics, FIGHT BACK with a detector. Cops dont like them because they work.

buy a GPS mate and keep in the car, dont tell the cops ya got it,and wait til they acuse you of speeding and book ya with a speeding fine, when you goto court and produce the evidence from the GPS watch the copper’s face go red with imbarrasment.
that is if you were not speeding.A cop accused me of doing 75k’s in a 60k zone,on a road i drive along daily for the past 7 years,i knew i wasn’t speeding,i look every 10 or so sec’s at me speedo,i could not wait til i went to court and produced the GPS evidence to the magistrate and to see the cop’s face go bright red,i loved every minute of it and with the magistrate condoning the police officer’s lie’s.

it is my position that the speed is not the calculation of a device which uses only seconds to gauge the speed but the term miles per hour means it should have to determine your distance after i hour
so that 7 miles over presumes he knows that you plan to travel for an hour at all and will exceed the distance properly advised by 7 miles
this suggests that all laws presume what cannot be prooven by his device

1 – You don’t seem to understand the word "Limit." If you’re complaining because you don’t think you should get a ticket for going 7 over, you should be complaining about the speed limit….not the police officers doing their job.

2 – If you can’t pay enough attention to maintain a legal speed, you shouldn’t be driving.

3 – I don’t know of anybody who has had a radar detector that hasn’t gotten a ticket. You get too confident and drive like even more of a danger to society.

    Tip:
    Obey the law.

I don’t write tickets for less then 12 mph over. I also don’t give warnings to people with radar detectors. I also don’t lie over something as petty as a speeding ticket. Who needs to make stuff up when there are plenty of violators out there breaking the law. Seriously, I am to busy dealing with the people driving like fools to spend any energy worrying about lesser violations, let alone run around trying to lie about people who are obeying the law.

If radar is run properly then a radar detector is not going to pick it up in time to save you anyway. Radar kept on standby does not put out a beam for the detector to use. When it is taken off standby and the Officer gets a reading no person ever made has the reaction time to slow down to avoid being picked up by the radar unit.

In addition to several good answers from people I believe are actual officers, there are issues I have not seem mentioned. Radar is only ONE method of determining your speed, and a radar detector won’t work against any other, even in theory. Laser speed detectors have such a narrow beam that IF a detector is triggered, it informs you you have ALREADY been clocked. They can also measure your speed by timing you travel between to point a know distance apart. If they FOLLOW you for a reasonable distance, they can read YOUR speed off THEIR speedometer, which has its calibration checked regularly.
As other answers have stated, most current radar units don’t emit anything to detect until the officer has spotted a vehicle that is speeding. By that time, it is too late.
